Volunteering in Santa Cruz, California with First Descents.
Another incredible week spent volunteering with First Descents in beautiful Santa Cruz, California! From September 27 through October 3, 2026, I had the pleasure of joining this wonderful organization once again as a volunteer photographer, documenting a week filled with surfing, new friendships, personal victories, and unforgettable moments along the California coast.
This was my fourth time volunteering as a photographer with First Descents, and I genuinely cannot express how much I look forward to these experiences. Every program is different, every group brings its own energy, and every time I leave feeling grateful that I had the opportunity to be part of something so meaningful.
As a travel photographer, I spend much of my time exploring new destinations and capturing the beauty of the world through my lens. Photography has taken me to incredible places, introduced me to extraordinary people, and allowed me to tell stories that go far beyond beautiful landscapes. But as much as I love creating images that inspire people to travel and discover the world, I also believe that photography can serve a much deeper purpose.
And that is exactly why volunteering with First Descents means so much to me.
That lens truly saved me during this program. With the surfers positioned so far offshore, having that additional reach made an enormous difference. It allowed me to photograph participants as they caught waves, capture their expressions and movements, and document moments that would have been nearly impossible to photograph with a phone from the beach.
It was one of those experiences that reminded me how valuable professional photography can be, especially during outdoor adventure programs.
Without a photographer equipped to capture the action from such a distance, many of those surfing moments might never have been documented. And knowing that the participants would leave with photographs of themselves riding waves, challenging their limits, and enjoying their adventure made the effort even more worthwhile.
Despite the difficult shooting conditions, I came away with so many beautiful images, and I was incredibly happy to be able to give those memories back to the people who made them.
Reconnecting With the First Descents Community
One of my favorite parts of returning to volunteer with First Descents is the opportunity to reconnect with people I have met through previous programs.
After four volunteering experiences, this organization has become much more than just a nonprofit I occasionally work with. It has introduced me to wonderful people, created meaningful friendships, and given me a community I genuinely look forward to seeing again.
This year was particularly special because I had the chance to reunite with several friends from my earlier First Descents adventures. Spending time together again, sharing stories, catching up, and creating new memories made the entire week even more enjoyable.
There is something special about returning to a place or an experience and seeing familiar faces. It creates a sense of belonging, and it reminds me that the connections we make while traveling and volunteering can last long after the adventure itself has ended.
I arrived in Santa Cruz excited about another week of photography, but I left with so much more than photographs.
Why Giving Back Through Photography Matters to Me
Photography is my profession, my creative outlet, and one of the greatest passions in my life. It allows me to explore the world, meet people from different backgrounds, and tell stories through images.
But I never want my work to be only about creating beautiful photographs.
I also want it to make a difference.
Volunteering as a photographer gives me an opportunity to use the skills I have spent years developing to support causes that are meaningful to me. Whether I am documenting an outdoor adventure, photographing a community event, or helping a nonprofit tell its story, I love knowing that my work can contribute to something beyond my own creative projects.
For me, giving back does not always have to mean making a financial donation. Sometimes it means offering your time, sharing your knowledge, or contributing a skill that can make a meaningful difference to someone else.
And photography is the skill I have to offer.
I love the idea that an image I create can become a lasting reminder of someone's courage, joy, friendship, or personal achievement. Long after a program ends and everyone returns home, those photographs remain.
That is one of the things I find most rewarding about volunteering as a travel and adventure photographer.
Until Next Time, First Descents!
As my week in Santa Cruz came to an end on October 3, I found myself reflecting on another memorable First Descents experience.
It was a week of early mornings, ocean waves, challenging photography conditions, wonderful reunions, new friendships, and countless moments worth remembering.
Most importantly, it was another reminder of why I keep coming back.
I am incredibly grateful to First Descents for welcoming me as a volunteer photographer for the fourth time and for allowing me to contribute to such meaningful adventures. Being part of this community is something I value deeply, and I already find myself looking forward to the possibility of joining another program next year.
I hope that 2027 will bring another opportunity to travel somewhere beautiful, reconnect with this wonderful community, meet new participants, and capture more unforgettable moments.
Until then, I will carry the memories of this Santa Cruz adventure with me, along with the photographs that tell its story.
Looking Ahead to 2027: Volunteer Photography Opportunities
Giving back through photography is something I hope to continue doing for many years to come.
Alongside my professional travel, portrait, and editorial photography work, I set aside a limited amount of time each year to volunteer my photography services for nonprofit organizations, charitable initiatives, and causes that are particularly close to my heart.
I am especially drawn to opportunities that bring together travel, outdoor adventure, personal growth, community, and meaningful storytelling.
If you represent a nonprofit organization, are organizing a charitable initiative, or know of a cause that could benefit from professional photography, I would love to hear from you.
I am currently considering a limited number of volunteer photography opportunities for 2027. While I am unable to take on every request, I am always interested in learning about organizations whose missions resonate with me and exploring ways I might contribute through my work.
Because sometimes the most meaningful photographs we create are not the ones we take for ourselves, but the ones we have the opportunity to give to others.
If you have a volunteer photography opportunity or a meaningful project you would like to share, please feel free to get in touch.
With love,
Anna Meshcheri
