In 2023, I had the privilege of joining First Descents once again—this time in Santa Cruz, California—where I volunteered as the official photographer for a transformative week-long surf adventure. The program was designed for young adults diagnosed with cancer, offering them a chance to step outside of their diagnosis, challenge themselves, and rediscover a sense of freedom and strength.

Throughout the week, I captured participants as they learned to surf the Pacific waves, shared powerful moments of connection, and embraced the healing spirit of the ocean and community. My goal was to keep them fully present by taking the responsibility of documenting every moment—letting them unplug, while I created a visual story of their experience.

At the end of the program, each participant received a curated gallery of professional images—souvenirs of their courage, laughter, and resilience. For me, this trip was just as meaningful. I left feeling inspired by every person I met and honored to contribute to such a powerful mission through my work.
